New Mexico Legal Aid Intake Attorney Positions Available

New Mexico Legal Aid, the state's largest provider of civil legal services for low-income clients, has new openings for attorneys to work in our Intake, Referral and Advice (IRA) Unit. Intake attorneys will interview client applicants, then provide information and advice, provide referrals, and potentially perform other brief assistance to eligible clients. All services will be provided by phone contact.

These positions can be affiliated with any of the NMLA offices located throughout New Mexico (see the "About Us" tab on our website for office locations).

The majority of NMLA's client applicants will be seeking help with family law cases (including domestic violence), landlord/tenant disputes, foreclosures, problems with public benefits programs, employment or wage theft problems, low-income taxpayer disputes and consumer law problems. There also may be calls involving tribal court issues, veterans issues, migrant farm worker issues, and various other civil law problems.

Duties for an IRA Attorney will include: interviewing applicants on substantive legal issues, providing legal information and advice, referrals, and brief services such as reviewing legal documents, helping clients fill out legal forms and write simple letters, providing brief advocacy calls on behalf of clients and providing guidance for pro se clients who need help to prepare for a pro se court appearance or strategize the next step in a self-help legal matter. An IRA Attorney may also be asked to provide initial pleadings or other documents in emergency cases. If appropriate, the Intake Attorney will also prepare the client case to be transferred for extended services by an NMLA office, practice group or specialty unit. Referrals may also include NMLA's statewide Volunteer Attorney Program.

IRA Attorneys are supervised by the manager of the IRA Unit, but they also collaborate with NMLA's Litigation Director, statewide practice groups and specialty units.

Work on the IRA Team will often be fast-paced and require quick and confident decision-making about the best response that can be given to a client. We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are passionate about justice and strongly committed to helping NMLA better serve our client community, including effective use of web-based systems and other technologies to deliver legal assistance. At least three years prior experience in a legal aid program or other relevant practice environment is preferred.

Successful candidates must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, manage a significant caseload and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community. The candidates must also be adept at the use of cloud based applications and MicroSoft 365 applications. Proficiency in Spanish or tribal languages spoken in New Mexico is a plus. The candidate must be licensed in New Mexico, eligible for admission by examination, or licensed in another state and eligible for reciprocity admission or New Mexico legal aid providers limited licensing. Reliable high-speed broadband connection at home is important.

Applicants may be subject to a background search. Please do not let this deter you from applying. NMLA is committed to a strong workforce and recognizes that persons with marks on their record may still be able to perform admirably.

Send a current resume and a brief (two pages maximum) letter of interest explaining what you would like to accomplish if you are selected for a position to:

Salary: DOE. NMLA is an EEO Employer. Health insurance benefits available.

Deadline to apply: we encourage submission of applications as soon as possible. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and will continue to be accepted until all available positions are filled.
